4th of July weekend is almost here, and if you are staying home for the holiday and on the hunt for things to do around the house, how about refurbishing your mailbox! One of the home’s most visible features is the mailbox, and while many persons spend a lot of time on their plants and landscaping, the mailbox should be way up there on the list of importance as well.

Here are some quick steps / tips for refurbishing your mailbox:

  1. Remove the red mail flag, then use a wire brush to remove any rust on the exterior of the mailbox.
  2. Caulk any seams – in order to keep the rain and snow from getting inside
  3. File down any sharp edges or nails that may be sticking – don’t want to injure yourself or your mail carrier.
  4. Clean the mailbox thoroughly. After it dries, wipe it down with a liquid deglosser.
  5. Paint it – obviously as evenly and neatly as possible. Allow the paint to dry for at least four hours
  6. Place new reflective address numbers on the side of the mailbox and on the inside of the mailbox door – so your mail carrier will be able to read them easily.
  7. Replace your red mail flag with a new one. You can get this at any hardware store.
  8. If your mailbox is on a post, install a post collar at the bottom – in order to protect it from the dreaded weed whacker. You can improvise and make a collar yourself by bending a sheet of brass, aluminum or rubber around the bottom of your post, and use coated exterior wood screws to attach it.
  9. If you happen to have a plastic mailboxes, you can clean it with a good cleaner and then spray paint with one that’s specifically for use on plastic.

That’s it … presto, you’re good to go with your fresh, spiffy looking mailbox for the Summer.

Boston, Massachusetts – A kitten that was apparently stuffed in a mailbox and abandoned, was adopted recently by a postal worker. The confused but otherwise healthy two-pound, eight-week-old female kitten was found among envelopes and packages in a public Boston mailbox by a letter carrier during the Saturday afternoon pick-up.

She was named “Postina” by workers at the MSPCA Animal Care and Adoption Center where she was fed, vaccinated and put up for adoption. Ironically, a New Hampshire postal worker – George Knapp – and his wife – Dani-Jean Stuart – have decide to make her their family pet, and have renamed her P.D. (for “postage due).”
